There are so many essential oils to choose from.
Have you ever wondered, "which oil do I use? I have no idea where to start!” If you have ever thought this, then you’re not alone. I have been there as I know many other people have as well. The overwhelming number of possibilities can be daunting.
One thing that has recently helped my clients understand how to be powerhouses of plant based solutions in their own homes is to simply learn oils by category.
Each oil has many functions, but there is always a body system that we can categorize oils into based on how they function in the body.
In today’s blog, I am focusing mostly on how different oils fit into different systems so that you have a better idea of which oils to reach for first when in need.
Keep in mind, detoxification and a healthy inflammatory response can be beneficial in almost any situation. So citrus oils and Frankincense can be applied almost always for support on any occasion. Just make sure that on your little ones you are using the proper dilution and dosage recommended by doTERRA.

So how do I know which ones to choose? I’m going to give an example to help you understand which oils to choose without thinking about just symptoms, but also body function and what is actually happening.
If my son was having a respiratory issue for example:
I would want to look at causation AND a way to open his airways. First I would address the airways. Breathe essential oil is my first inclination because it is formulated specifically for this. But then I would also choose an oil that has steroidal properties such as Basil or Rosemary to help his response to an overactive immune system. Then oils with inflammatory response properties such as Deep Blue and Frankincense would be my next grab. I would also want to consider congestion in the entire body so supporting detoxification with citrus oils would be my next go to. Last but not least I want to consider the histamine response in the body considering that over active lungs can be a sign of too much histamine released. Lavender and Roman Chamomile can support a healthy histamine response.
Instructions are below, But first, Here is a dosage chart to help you navigate usage.
Body systems addressed for cough
1. Respiratory issues,
2. Inflammatory response,
4. Histamine response, and last but not least,
5. Corticosteroid response in the body which we want to support with Basil or Rosemary.
Wintergreen is good as well, however, Deep Blue has us covered there. So that is why I would opt for the Basil and Rosemary. For prevention, I would definitely look into digestive health such as incorporating Terrazyme, PB Assist and Zendocrine Complex. Anytime there is a need for respiratory support, there is almost always a digestive component. The digestive tract and liver is the primary detox chimney, the lungs and skin are second. Anytime we see a respiratory issue other than the occasional cold, we can bet that our first detox pathway, the digestion, and liver need more support.
It would also be a good idea that if respiratory issues are coming up for you, to look at possible food sensitivities by doing an elimination diet or working with a professional that specializes in food sensitivities since this can be a huge causation of inflammation in the digestive system and lungs.
The doTERRA Daily Nutrient Pack and Deep Blue Polyphenol Complex are two important and highly needed supplements for prevention of congestion of the lungs as well for cellular support and energy to create movement in the main detoxifying systems of your body by specifically working on a cellular level.
You’re probably thinking, “Okay Melody, but how do I use them all”? Don’t worry, instructions are my forte! Here is how to use essential oils for respiratory threats or congestion taking a deeper look into body systems and functions. Now keep in mind, assuming you have seen a doctor and are following their recommendations, these suggestions I am making can be a great added support but do not substitute medical advice.
Temporary relief of respiratory congestion:
Breathe: A few drops on lungs and chest, 1 drop cupped in hands, inhale deeply
Rosemary: 2 drop on lungs
Basil: 2 drops in capsule or under tongue
Frankincense: A full capsule up to 2 times a day
Deep Blue: A few drops on chest with a carrier oil
Lavender or Roman Chamomile: 2 drops under tongue (optional)
Lemon or Grapefruit: 2-3 drops in a glass of water
Serenity, Balance, White Fir: 1 drop for emotional SUPPORT. Use your oil of choice on heart chakra or solar plexus
For deeper congestion add a few drops of Geranium and Douglas Fir topically on the chest and lungs for deeper respiratory support. Again, these are suggestions based on my knowledge and usage of essential oils and are not to replace the medical advice you should seek from your doctor.
