The reason I Avoid GMO is not because it’s a ‘hybrid’ as advertised, but because it has been genetically engineered to withstand poison such as herbicide and glyphosate produced by Monsanto.
It has been advertised to be harmless to humans, however, GMO’s are banned in 38 countries due to the health problems they are seeing.
In the United States, we are at war with the food industry. Big Food is mass producing engineered food instead of real food, Big Pharma benefits because of all the sick people Big Food produces.
The problem with engineering food to withstand poison through its DNA is that OUR DNA IS NOT ENGINEERED to withstand poison. From Autism to ADHD, to Autoimmune disorders, Our chemical food age is producing sick people in such mass amounts that our children are the first generation who will not outlive their parents.
Let’s talk about GMOs. GMOs, or Genetically Modified Organisms, are “plant, animal, microorganism or other organisms whose genetic makeup has been modified using recombinant DNA methods (also called gene splicing), gene modification or transgenic technology.” In a nutshell, GMOs are a combination of two or more organisms that have been genetically modified to remove undesirable qualities from each organism to create a hybrid, more desirable organism. Typically, GMOs are associated with seeds but they can apply to medicine (insulin) and bioremediation (microbes that eat up oil from oil spills). While the intent to create a more robust, less disease prone product is admirable and, in some cases is quite useful, the application in agriculture has nevertheless become a source of contention.
The Evolution of GMOs
GM Seeds have been used by farmers for little over 20 years but traditional plant breeding has been used for hundreds of years. Naturally occurring or hand modifying the genetic qualities of seeds is nothing new. In fact, that is how many plants have been able to adapt to changing climates and environments. Farmers have been able to produce fruits and vegetables that retain freshness longer and have fewer seeds through simple cross-breeding of select crops, to our benefit (think seedless watermelons and grapes). However, newer genetic modification methods have gone a step further and made the crops resistant to pesticides. An example of a company that exemplifies all that is wrong with this next-level genetic tampering is Monsanto. Monsanto is an agricultural company that produces Roundup (yes, the weed killer) and GMO seeds. They purposely engineer their crops to withstand the glyphosate-based pesticides of their weed killers. A good idea but with terrible consequences. The more pesticide farmers use, the more the weeds and insects it is intended to eliminate become resistant and the more the crops have to be modified to increase their resistance too. It’s a viscous cycle that ultimately culminates in more pesticides being used on the crops we consume. To add a little perspective, currently over 200 million pounds of chemicals are used on food crops each year (100,000 tons) ! That is a lot of chemicals! No wonder the crops have to keep being modified.
GMO products have saturated our foods so much that at least seven out of ten processed foods contain genetically engineered ingredients. The FDA has not set up regulations for labeling foods that contain genetically engineered ingredients, at this time, since their stance on genetically engineered products is that they are “generally recognized as safe.” Fortunately, not everyone agrees with the FDA’s assessment. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has spent numerous years researching the carcinogenic effects on humans. For some time, the IARC agreed with the FDA that there was limited carcinogenic effects on humans. However, after further testing, the IRAC determined that “glyphosate also caused DNA and chromosomal damage in human cells, although it gave negative results in tests using bacteria.” What this means is that initial tests were incomplete as they were looking at bacterial resistance, not cellular damage. Without the whole truth, glyphosate has been allowed to permeate our crops and we’re only now realizing how detrimental that is on our bodies. While it cannot be directly linked to glyphosate exposure yet, knowing that research is confirming the detrimental effects of the chemical on our bodies sheds new light on the alarming rise in cancers, thyroid diseases, digestive disorders, mental disorders, and food sensitivities.
Curbing the GMO Pervasion
Currently, at least 38 countries have banned GMO crops, in production or import or both. The reasoning ranges from political stances to ethical science-based concerns, however much of the attention is being directed toward Monsanto. Monsanto is currently embroiled in serious legal proceedings for their weed killer, Roundup, and their GMO crop management as it relates to neighboring farmers. These two hot topics alone have stirred up enough negative press for the company, which is beneficial to consumers but bad for the agricultural company’s bottom line. California state legislature is now enforcing new labeling requirements for any product that has exposure to or contains glyphosate, which means that Monsanto will have to label every food product made with their crops. We’re talking about labeling all packaged and whole foods that contain corn, soybean, cotton, potatoes, rice, apples, etc. Imagine picking out a box of cereal that says, “May cause cancer.” You’re probably not going to want to give that to your kids for breakfast. And labeling is just the start. As the legal proceedings continue between Monsanto and the California Supreme Court, the use of glyphosate could significantly diminish or even disappear entirely from food crop production. In the meantime, consumers will still be purchasing products made from these crops, unaware of the potential risk they contain.
Organic foods and products with the Non-GMO label are the best alternatives available. Products that are certified organic must pass rigorous certification standards established and maintained by the USDA. “The USDA organic regulations include organic system plan requirements, recordkeeping requirements, comprehensive process audits, and inspections that trace organic product from market to farm.” The Non-GMO label requires the manufacturer or seller to meet the standards of the NON-GMO Project Verification Process, which includes strict evaluation of typical GMO products, corn, soy, and rice. The third-party verification for non-GMO products serves the purpose of keeping food-labeling “unbiased, rigorous, and transparent.” While both of these food quality verifications are great for assisting consumers in making better informed choices, they are often far more expensive than their less-regulated counterparts.
Despite our better judgments, families may have to purchase products with GMOs simply to make their budgets stretch further. So how then do we help combat the toxicity that we consume every day? Well, I’ll share with you what I do.
Here are my top tips on Chemical foods to Avoid and top tips on detoxing those chemicals.
Tips on what chemical foods to Avoid and What you can buy instead
- Buy food labeled Organic & Non-GMO, if it’s not labeled organic, it still gets herbicides and pesticides (poison to your DNA and cells)
- Grow your own food in season
- Avoid things with MSG, Autolyzed Yeast Extract, Canola, Soybean, or Vegetable oil, any oil not labeled organic. Instead look for natural preservatives like salt, EO's, vinegar, vitamin E and Vitamin C.
- Never consume products with “High Fructose Corn Syrup” or food dyes. Both are chemical neurotoxins that contribute to neurological disease and autoimmune conditions.
Many times we are inadvertently exposed to these poisons, if not through our food we can be exposed by the environment. Think about all the pretty grass in your neighborhoods and parks that are using glyphosate in massive amounts as well. Many people don’t understand they have genetic mutations that make it so this poison is very difficult to process. The genetic mutations are starting to become more common due to the chemicals themselves. If you are feeling tired, fatigued, dizzy, or off and don’t know why it could be environmental toxins. You can also get rid of the top indoor common chemicals that affect health and DNA.
- synthetic perfumes, candles, and air fresheners all of which can contribute to sinus infections, asthma, and allergies
- Cleaners and chemical detergents
- Body and skin care products with chemicals, dyes, and perfumes
Tips on how to detox when exposed to GMO’s or chemical foods or environmental toxins
- Use a Few drops Grapefruit and Lemon essential oil under your tongue, in a glass of water and over liver and kidneys, this helps support your body’s ability to produce glutathione.
- Take 1 tsp Activated Charcoal (remineralize an hour later) with VMz Vitamin Mineral Complex
- Use Copaiba essential oil in a capsule and along spine for neurological toning
- Use Zendocrine complex morning and night for 3 days and consider Zendocrine oil over your thyroid for healthy detoxification and cellular support
